BMP files often store pixel data with little or no compression, which makes even ordinary photos and scans surprisingly large. Converting BMP to JPG creates a much lighter file that is easier to email, upload, and keep in a photo library.
JPG is designed for photographs and other images with gradual color changes. Use the quality control to choose how much compression to apply; a higher setting retains more detail, while a lower setting reduces the download further.
Because JPG uses lossy compression and has no transparency channel, it is less suitable for pixel art, crisp interface captures, or bitmaps that require transparent areas. Transparent pixels are placed on white during this conversion, and all processing stays in your browser.

Keep your source files when you may need to edit them again. Converting to a lossy format such as JPG can reduce file size, but repeated lossy exports may gradually reduce visible detail.
