Convert JPG to PNG when an editor, publishing system, or development workflow specifically requires PNG. The new file can be saved and edited again without adding another generation of JPG compression artifacts.
The conversion does not recover detail already removed by the original JPG compression, and it does not create transparency where none existed. It simply places the decoded JPG pixels into a lossless PNG container.
PNG files made from photos are often larger than their JPG sources because lossless compression is less efficient for continuous-tone imagery. This tradeoff makes sense when format compatibility or avoiding further lossy saves matters more than the smallest file size.

Keep your source files when you may need to edit them again. Converting to a lossy format such as JPG can reduce file size, but repeated lossy exports may gradually reduce visible detail.
